Sagittarius [धनुष (Dhanuṣa) quality Dvisvabhava (dual)] is the ninth astrological sign in the Zodiac, originating from the constellation of Sagittarius and spans 240–270th degrees of the zodiac. Under the tropical zodiac, the sun transits this sign between approximately November 23 and December 21. In western astrology, the sign is now no longer aligned with the constellation as a result of the precession of the equinoxes. Sagittarius is considered a “masculine,” positive (extrovert) sign. It is also a fire sign and one of the four mutable signs.

Sagittarius is ruled by the planet Jupiter. In Greek mythology, the Centaur Chiron was the son of Philyra and Saturn, who was said to have changed himself into a horse to escape his jealous wife, Rhea. He mentored Achilles, a Greek hero of the Trojan War, in archery. Chiron was eventually immortalized in the constellation of Centaurus or in some version, Sagittarius.

Along with Aries and Leo, Sagittarius is a part of the Fire Trigon as well as the last of the reproductive trinity (The Reproductive Trinity begins at the autumnal meridian, September 22, and ends at the winter solstice, December 21). It also follows Gemini and Virgo as third of the mutable signs, which are the signs that feature changeable quality.
